In this article we deepen an unpublished revelation about the development of Grand Theft Auto VI. According to Rob Nelson, co-responsible to Rockstar North, during the early stages of the project, developers seriously considered the idea of implementing four main playable characters, rather than the two initially planned. The hypothesis of a “quartet” was the daughter of Rockstar’s will to overcome the consolidated narrative model of the series, begun with Michael, Franklin and Trevor in GTA 5. After demonstrating the validity of the choral story, the developers were faced with a choice: further increase the number of protagonists or completely rethink the narrative approach. The final decision was to opt for an intermediate solution, without sacrificing the plurality of views. The idea of managing four parallel stories would have risked diluting the depth of characters and excessively complicating the architecture of the game. The central relationship between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos was at the heart of this reflection. Rather than simple travel companions, the two are presented as a couple, a dynamic narrative element on which the player could exert influence through meaningful choices along the arc of history.
