News Escape on GTA 6: gameplay leak and full map – new CyberLeek polemics

The GTA VI community is in turmoil after the online appearance of two alleged gameplay videos and an image that seems to reveal the full map of the game. Movies show Jason Duval, the protagonist, while playing basketball outside the house and driving a car during a pursuit of a NPC; the origin of the files has not yet been ascertained and their authenticity has not been confirmed. The leaked materials were associated with a cryptocurrency and a website that can be traced, according to online posts, to the CyberLeek group. Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive are working to remove uploaded content on social media, while external sources express concern for memecoin promoted through those materials. In addition to the video and image of the map, CyberLeek’s website publishes three requests for Rockstar Games and other publishers. The manifesto criticises the trend of the sector to focus on digital preorders, DLC for single player defined “false” and the removal of content for which some consumers had already paid. The leak of GTA VI news fits into a context of contestation against commercial practices considered unfair by a community, recalling the case of the title The Crew, protagonist of a Stop Killing Games consumer movement. The manifesto concludes with a threat to the entire sector: “The publishers must be careful. If CyberLeek managed to reach Rockstar, no one is safe. This is a message to all major companies: behave well, or you will be the next target. ” The story fits into a long series of news escapes on the franchise. In 2022 more than 90 videos and images of a preliminary version had already been released online following one of the major cyber attacks in the world of video games. In December 2023, the first trailer of GTA VI had been leaked to X/Twitter less than 24 hours before the official release, prompting Rockstar to publish it in advance on YouTube. The story adds to the previous leaks of news regarding the release date of Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look, a temporary Netflix exclusive scheduled for August 27, which should remain free on Netflix for six hours before being made available on other platforms like YouTube. Il fatto che CyberLeek sia legato a una criptovaluta è un campanello d’allarme. Non mi convince affatto questa operazione di marketing occulta, e la menzione della memecoin aggiunge un ulteriore strato di complessità alla situazione. Quello che noto è che questo tipo di approccio, quello di strumentalizzare il hype per promuovere un asset digitale, non è nuovo nel mondo dei videogiochi – e il caso The Crew ne è una chiara dimostrazione. Mi fa pensare che Rockstar e Take-Two Interactive potrebbero essere in una corsa contro il tempo, non solo per recuperare la proprietà intellettuale, ma anche per gestire l'immagine pubblica di fronte a questa escalation. La minaccia finale del manifesto di CyberLeek – “nessuno è al sicuro” – è un campanello d’allarme serio. Se questi leak continuano ad arrivare, e soprattutto se si dimostrano autentici, il danno alla reputazione di Rockstar potrebbe essere irreparabile, anche prima dell'uscita del gioco. Il riferimento a Leonida nella descrizione dei video mi fa pensare che ci siano collegamenti indiretti con gli eventi della storia, forse riferimenti a zone specifiche del gioco, o magari elementi narrativi ancora non rivelati. L’uso di un autotrasportatore come nemico in una colluttazione sembra voler puntare su combattimenti più rozzi e violenti, un'altra possibile evoluzione del gameplay che abbiamo visto in altri capitoli della saga.
