Edinburgh: Rockstar under pressure for dismissals and trade union activity on GTA VI

The controversy involving Rockstar North intensifies, with an increasingly marked focus on the upcoming launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. The Scottish study is at the centre of accusations of anti-union behaviour, feeding community expectations and international debate on the video industry. 220 Rockstar North employees formally requested the immediate reintegration of 31 colleagues fired in October, a gesture organized by the independent IWGB union that denounces a potential anti-union persecution. The official motivation provided by Rockstar – violations of company policies related to disclosure of confidential information – is deemed to be pretentious by workers and trade union, considered a form of reprisal for trade union activity. The protest quickly took on an international dimension: on 7 November there were simultaneous demonstrations in front of the offices of Rockstar North and the London office of Take-Two Interactive, while in Paris the members of the Le Syndicat des Travailleureuses du Jeu Vidéo (STJV) organized a presidio. The question came to the British parliament with the intervention of the parliamentary Christine Jardine, who called for the support of ministers and the prevention of such episodes. On the agenda, a demonstration in front of the Scottish Parliament of Holyrood on 18 November, in conjunction with a meeting of a multi-party parliamentary group on the Scottish video industry. The IWGB filed formal legal appeals against Rockstar, accusing the study of refusing meetings and attempting a negotiated resolution, practices that could be configured as trade union and blacklisting victimization. The situation is constantly changing, with the future of the GTA VI development team hanging on a thread.
