Eighty Years of Development for Grand Theft Auto VI: A Team of 4000 People

The development of the long-awaited follow-up to one of the world's best-selling video games required an extraordinary commitment, involving over 4,000 people for more than eight years. The expected launch is scheduled for 19 November 2026. An article published by Bloomberg reveals the details of this long process, illustrated by journalist Jason Schreier. Schreier visited Rockstar North's offices in Edinburgh, where the GTA series was born in 1997 (at the time DMA Design) and has been leading the development of the game since 2018. The project, called “Project Americas”, focuses on the events of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a couple trying to establish themselves in the criminal world of Florida, especially in Miami. The initial idea included large portions of North and South America, but the focus focused on the solar city and its immediate surroundings. The development of GTA VI has been characterized by interruptions due to the massive collaboration with the realization of Red Dead Redemption II, a project that has absorbed much of the resources of Rockstar Games for years. After the completion of this last title in 2018, the other company offices resumed working on GTA VI, concentrating the activity of about ten studies on the creation of the new chapter. Jason Schreier has previously described Rockstar Games' working rhythms as extremely intense, especially during periods preceding the launch of Red Dead Redemption II.
