Rockstar: Satira and Time – The Strategy Behind the World of GTA VI

Rockstar Games continues to underline the importance of political satire in GTA VI, but with an approach aimed at avoiding references too linked to contemporary reality. As Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative, explained, the goal is to create a credible and satirical world without anchoring to specific figures or events that could quickly become obsolete. Humphries highlighted the difficulties related to the long development times of the game: “We are trying to make very specific games when they are published, but at the same time they are not an exact reproduction of the world we live in. ” This means that the team focuses on creating Leonida, the fictitious state in which GTA VI is set, as a fertile ground for social satire. The strategy involves the use of classical satirical elements such as elections, political campaigns, automatic calls and radio advertising to build a recognizable and grotesque world. However, instead of faithfully replicating real situations – such as conspiracy theories or public reaction to everyday events – Rockstar intends to distort these phenomena to make them absurd, maintaining the characteristic tone of the series. "There is great attention not only to reflecting reality, but to make everything satirical, greater than life and more grotesque," said Humphries. A crucial element of this strategy is the will to keep the game relevant over time. As Rob Nelson had already explained, Rockstar North's co-studio head, "very specific political issues or memes grow old quickly", so Rockstar aims to create a satirical world that can continue to be current even after the game's release. The choice includes elements such as the possibility of resuming and deforming contemporary phenomena, without rigidly binding on the news of the day. Rockstar's strategy does not eliminate the political component from the satire of GTA VI; rather, it aims to make sure that Leonida can tease contemporary society, keeping the game world relevant over time.
