Rockstar and ghosts of the past: Liberty City and Agent Trevor emerge from leaked files

Sometimes the leaks don't tell the future. They tell everything a game could have become. And that's exactly what emerges from a new material attributed to Rockstar Games, where files linked to deleted content from GTA V, including a version of Liberty City, the famous Agent Trevor project and even an extremely preliminary version of the GTA VI map, apparently dating back many years. The material has not been officially confirmed by Rockstar and is therefore to be treated as leak, but some elements are framed with information already known and details confirmed over time by people involved in development. The feeling is to be in front of a window on Rockstar's "behind the scenes", a rare opportunity to see what we could never imagine. Liberty City may have been much more than a simple noise: leaked files reveal that Rockstar would have worked in part in a version of the city linked to GTA V. This does not automatically imply the existence of a complete expansion ready for launch, but indicates that the idea was concrete. For years, fans have imagined a GTA V capable of expanding beyond Los Santos; seeing today elements traceable to Liberty City rekindles one of the most interesting questions: how ambitious, initially, Rockstar's single-player plans? On Agent Trevor's front, the situation is stronger. The existence of a single-player content dedicated to the character had already been confirmed by Steven Ogg, interpreter of the role, who had told that he had recorded material for a story in which Trevor would work under cover for the federal, as a "James Bond Trevor". The project was then set aside. The presence of new references in leaked files adds additional weight to this reconstruction and reopens the debate on possible narrative expansions for GTA V that Rockstar chose not to achieve. It is inevitable to connect this discovery to the explosion of GTA Online. GTA V's multiplayer has become one of the most profitable products in Rockstar's history, completely transforming the way the company has supported the game in the following years. If there were initially larger plans for narrative DLC, the success of the online perhaps helped move resources and priorities.
