GTA VI: Rockstar and Netflix – An unexpected business?

Rockstar Games’ approach to the promotion of Grand Theft Auto VI is raising questions, especially in relation to the partnership with Netflix. Although the game is not yet officially available, Rockstar's strategies suggest a radical change in the landscape of video marketing. The main novelty concerns the early distribution of the “Extended Look” dedicated to GTA VI. The promotional material will be released on Netflix six hours before the official channels such as YouTube and the official site of the game. This means that in order to preview the new images and contents of GTA 6, users will have to be subscribed to the streaming service. This is an unconventional operation: Rockstar is not selling the preview directly, but offers it through Netflix as an exclusive content. This raises questions about the future of marketing in the video game industry and the increasing influence of streaming services. If this strategy succeeds, it could open the way to other companies looking for new ways to reach their audience. The situation looks special: pay a Netflix subscription to see an advertising intended to promote the purchase of a game. However, Rockstar seems to focus on an innovative approach, testing new modes of interaction with fans and exploiting the popularity of platforms like Netflix. It remains to be seen if this model will find the favor of the general public and if it will have a lasting impact on the video industry. The preview will be available on Netflix on August 27, followed by YouTube and the official website of Grand Theft Auto VI.
