Grand Theft Auto VI: The Expectation of Meme

The hype around Grand Theft Auto VI has become a cultural phenomenon, fueled by a long wait and concrete elements such as breathtaking trailers and a stellar soundtrack. For years social media have been populated by the meme “we had X before GTA 6”, with “X” that indicated every possible event, from the arrival of new musical albums to the global challenges (alieni, AI, pandemie). This wait, long-lived and shared by a vast audience, made GTA VI an object of worship even before its release. The game's release, developed by Rockstar Games and published by Take-Two Interactive, is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, thirteen years after the release of Grand Theft Auto V. The date has been postponed several times: May 2026, then 19 November 2026. The heart of waiting lies in the return to Vice City, an iconic reference of the 2002 game that defined a generation. This time, however, the setting is much broader and more detailed: the fictitious state of Leonida. Rockstar Games aims to offer an exasperated photograph of America, with particular attention to contemporary Florida, described as "the dark side of America's most sunny place", a luxury mix, tourism, crime and spectacularization of private life – an exploration of Instagram, TikTok and global trends. The city was recreated with an unprecedented level of detail, taking back the imagination of Miami Vice and Scarface, but bringing it into a modern and extremely realistic context. The role of Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval is at the center of this wait, as playable characters of the game officially confirmed by the trailers.
