Rockstar denies political messages against Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in GTA VI

The GTA 6 release generated a huge expectation, accompanied by some controversy. The title produced by Rockstar Games offers a vast world to explore and a rich variety of activities, but the focus is inevitably addressed to the two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, linked by a complex criminal-romantic relationship. Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of Rockstar Games' storytelling, in an interview with Love Magazine. Responding to specific questions regarding the military and social past of Jason Duval, Humphries stated that the story of the protagonist does not contain any explicit political message. “We didn’t want to give any interpretation about Jason’s past,” he said. “His decisions – like drug trafficking or bank robberies – come from his material circumstances, letting the player decide whether he is forced to do so or whether it is a choice dictated by his character.” Despite the denial of a direct political message, the interview highlights how the concept of the “American dream” remains a central element in the series universe, in line with the themes explored previously in GTA 4 and GTA 5. Social satire is present, but the final interpretation remains in the hands of the player. It remains to be seen if, at the end of the plot, satire persists and if it has been able to use its tools to spread a political message, as it initially assumed.
