Rockstar confirms the regional block of PS5 codes for Grand Theft Auto VI

Rockstar Games confirmed one of the main fandom questions through its official support page for Grand Theft Auto VI. In particular, it has been documented that physical codes for physical copies are blocked regionally on PlayStation 5 and completely free of geographical restrictions on Xbox. Recently we had analyzed a alleged virality regarding the fact that the download codes for GTA 6 in Japan expired after 170 days, ranking the alleged claim as excessive and probably related to bonus content rather than the game itself. This update could confirm the validity of the deadline, applied to the PS5 product code in Japan and actually be true. At the moment we cannot be certain, but the official page suggests that this is an implemented mechanism. It is clear that the code within the GTA 6 package only works with a PlayStation Network account registered in the same region where the game was purchased. If you purchase a copy in the United States, you will need a North American account. By purchasing in Japan, United Kingdom or United Arab Emirates, you will need an account from the respective region. If the code and account does not match, the code may not activate, leaving you with a physical copy of the game that you cannot redeem due to the account registered in the wrong country. On Xbox Series X and S, none of these restrictions apply. The code is without geographical restrictions: you can buy it, redeem it everywhere, done. This is more a drawback than a problem, especially if you try to get GTA 6 at discounted or free prices or to bypass restrictions in playing the next Grand Theft Auto where it is forbidden. The regional block of games has a long history, even with physical supports, but it has been less frequent in the most recent generations. Although there would be problems with the regionalized PlayStation 2 games, leaving unconscious some players who could not even run the disk in the console, the PlayStation 3 featured only two regionalized games in its full portfolio. Although always present, it was not something the gamers have been worried about in the last ten years. Such an important launch with a regional block despite being entirely digital brings us to the arguments felt in recent weeks. When you replace the disk with a code, you don't just lose the disk, but inherit all the restrictions that accompany digital purchases, including those to which a disk buyer should never have thought. The regional block is a rule of the digital store glued to a product sold in a physical box on a shelf, which represents the most strange outcome. The division of the platform makes the situation even more strange. Xbox codes are without geographical restrictions. This is a choice or, at least, a consequence of how the Sony Interactive Entertainment account system works compared to Microsoft. In any case, the same game, sold in the same type of packaging, behaves differently depending on the logos on the face, and the most restrictive version is that on the platform that is also finishing the production of the discs.
