PlayStation Adopts the "Confection Code" model for GTA VI: What it means for the Market

PlayStation has officially announced its intention to abandon physical records in games stores, adopting the “code-in-box” format from the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI in November 2026. The decision, confirmed by financial director Lin Tao during the session of questions and answers relating to the report on financial results of the first quarter of 2026, follows a trend already in place for PS5, with an increasing number of “code-in-box” versions available on shelves. The strategy, which already includes the distribution of ransom codes as it happens in North America, was made evident by the upcoming release of GTA VI, becoming a model for the future release of PlayStation titles. Although Sony continues to predict fundamental sales channels from physical retailers (and has no intention of renouncing Blu-ray support for its first-party games, as demonstrated by the plan for God of War Laufey in 2027), the transition to the “code in the package” is already in place. The move generated contrasting reactions: Video Games Plus, a Canadian chain, decided not to market packaging containing only ransom codes, while some GameStop employees expressed strong objections from customers. Nevertheless, Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, does not provide a significant impact on its revenues. The "package code" strategy for GTA VI reflects a trend already established in some regions and emphasizes Sony's commitment to digital format, despite the concerns expressed by some industry operators regarding the impact on the sale of physical games.
