Regional restrictions of the GTA VI Physical Codes on PS5: Comparison with Xbox Reveal a PSN Infrastructure Problem

Sony's long-term strategy towards an entirely digital future is emerging as a significant obstacle to accessing the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, and regional restrictions imposed on physical codes on PS5 are creating controversies. The physical edition of the game, provided with a download code, is blocked at regional level, functional only if your PSN account is associated with one of the territories officially supported by Rockstar Games. The full list of countries supported by Rockstar includes North America (USA and Canada), Brazil, a LATAM region including Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and 12 other nations, United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, a Rest of Asia group that includes Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Taiwan, as well as a wide category Rest of the EMEA and Asia area, which includes most of Europe, India and Asia. Despite the breadth of this list, considerable omissions remain. To bypass these restrictions, some players are using unofficial solutions such as creating secondary PSN accounts registered in supported countries, a method that has worked for years during the PlayStation 3 era and which is based on address falsification. Although this practice is considered on horseback among the legal gray areas compared to Sony's terms of service, it poses a risk, albeit minimal, of problems with the account. It is important to compare this situation with Xbox, where Rockstar stated that there are no regional restrictions for the physical editions of GTA 6: the codes work regardless of where the account is registered. This asymmetry highlights a fundamental problem in the PSN infrastructure and the difficulty Sony is facing in fully supporting its digital ecosystem, as evidenced by the obstacles encountered by players to access Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls on PC. The official PSN currently supports around 73 countries, a figure that, despite its size, does not reach most of the world's gaming spending.
