Sony observes with optimism the launch of GTA VI despite the challenges related to the prices of memories

The consolidation of Sony Group Corporation’s domain in the gaming console market is largely linked to the upcoming release of “Grand Theft Auto VI”, an event that occurs in the background of increasing concerns for increasing memory costs and their impact on the profit margins of the company. The Japanese conglomerate, positioned as the main contender in the battle for supremacy in the premium segment of consoles against Microsoft initiatives, has a long history of collaborations with Take-Two Interactive Software, the creator of the long-awaited sequel that will arrive on November 19. According to Serkan Toto, founder of the consulting company Kantan Games, “GTA VI” will be available exclusively on consoles and most new users will opt for a PlayStation 5. Sony has already overcome the difficulties caused by the interruptions of the supply chain during the COVID-19 pandemic with the launch of the PS5 in 2020, a model that now has to face the impact of relapses of memories resulting from investments in artificial intelligence. Despite efforts to ensure memory supplies for the current fiscal year, the company provides that prices will remain high even in the coming months. Analysts such as Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis believe that the launch of “GTA VI” can slow down sales of PS5 hardware and support the growth of software revenues. With nearly 230 million copies sold by “Grand Theft Auto V” since its release in 2013, Take-Two Interactive Software aims to launch the sequel the same year, although it was postponed twice. Despite Sony's desire for an early release of the game to boost sales at the early stage of the adoption of the PlayStation 5, now that the lifecycle of the console is running out, Harding-Rolls stressed that the rise in PS5 prices makes it less competitive than the arrival of “GTA VI”. The basic version of the game on PS5 will be sold at a price of 79.99 USD in digital format, while the franchise is known for its freedom of exploration in an open world set in a stylized reconstruction of the United States. The company plans to discontinue the production of physical disks from 2028, a strategic decision aimed at supporting profits in the digital age.
