Take-Two Challenge: GTA Online Could Retard Launch of the Single Player

According to internal sources and statements by Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, the multiplayer mode of GTA VI (GTA 6), called “Online”, may not be available at the launch of the main game. Pre-order sales of GTA 6 were defined as "exceptional", but attention focused on single-player content. As reported by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, Zelnick expressed the desire not to discuss a new GTA Online shortly, and did not provide timing for his release. This position could disappoint investors, considering the profitability deriving from the recurring expense of customers (currently $5.2 billion in the turnover of the fiscal year 2026, mainly thanks to microtransactions). Schreier has emphasized that Zelnick has revealed a total turnover of 6,7 billion dollars for the fiscal year 2026, with 1.4 billion deriving from the direct sales of the games. However, Take-Two and Rockstar seem happy to focus on the current GTA Online model, promising further updates. According to Jason Schreier, an upcoming ad for multiplayer mode is not likely, although Rockstar may have already developed the code and content needed to allow a launch a month after the single player's release. The company is also considering the opportunity to release a PC port, still unconfirmed, and tease it with crossover objects related to GTA 5. At the moment it is not clear if those who make the preorder of GTA 6 will have free access to GTA Online, or if this mode will be available only as an additional purchase or through microtransactions and subscriptions, perhaps also inspired by the FiveM model managed by the community.
