Daniel Vávra criticizes GTA 6: «Eat a narrative nucleus» – SpazioGames

The initial enthusiasm for the presentation of GTA VI is tempted with a critical evaluation by Daniel Vávra, author and director of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. In a post on X, Vávra expressed his disappointment at the lack of a true " narrative link" in the material shown, underlining the excessive emphasis on technical aspects and the open world. Vávra is a supporter of a complex narrative based on internal and external conflicts, deep characters, credible motivations and a coherent environment. According to the director, the presentation of Rockstar Games still lacks these key elements, leaving the two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, described as superficial figures immersed in chaotic violence. Criticism is not limited to a moral judgment on crime, but evidences the lack of depth in the representation of desires, contradictions and personal stakes of the couple. Despite the narrative reserves, Vávra recognizes the remarkable technical merits of Rockstar Games: an extraordinary level of detail and an open world on an impressive scale. However, it highlights the risk that excessive emphasis on technology and simulation can obscure the crucial aspects of the script. The prudence is dictated by the fact that the presentation video lasts only about 26 minutes and is limited to condensing systems, settings and possibilities of play, without telling the complete arc of the story of the characters. Although numerous details have already emerged on the gameplay and reactivity of the world, the lack of information on the plot is a critical factor. Additional indices suggest that the adventure could be much wider than shown so far: a full game with history and optional activities would take about 80 hours. If this estimate is accurate, Rockstar Games' reveal inevitably omitted much of the development of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Vávra's comment is therefore particularly interesting as a comparison between two different creative approaches: Kingdom Come: Deliverance focuses on consequences, historical credibility and progression of the protagonist, while Grand Theft Auto combines satire, show and systemic freedom. At the moment, Vává's assessment is more an observation on the potential direction of narrative than a definitive criticism of the game itself.
