Rockstar focuses on the singleplayer of GTA VI, but the acquisition of Cfx.re could revolutionize the future online at Vice City

Rockstar Games continues to focus on the narration and singleplayer experience of Grand Theft Auto VI, located at Vice City, maintaining at the moment a multiplayer mode linked to the next chapter. The decision follows a decade during which the online component of the series represented a fundamental element for the success of the franchise. Rockstar has not released information about the name, structure or characteristics of a multiplayer compartment. The expression “GTA Online 2.0” – used informally to indicate a possible evolution of the service – has not yet been officialized. The communication of the study is therefore separated from the numerous speculations on the online future of the franchise. The current GTA Online, launched at the end of 2013, has evolved far beyond its origins as a collection of competitive activities and cooperatives. Rapins, criminal enterprises, nightclubs, acrobatics, machinima and role-play allowed the community to use Los Santos also as a social and creative space. A concrete element in Rockstar's strategy is the acquisition of Cfx.re, the team responsible for FiveM and RedM platforms. This operation led to Rockstar a team specializing in custom servers and role play, phenomena that have expanded the possibilities offered by PC versions of the company's previous titles. The success of FiveM has shown the interest of millions of players for alternative experiences to the traditional cycle of missions developed by the creative teams themselves. Communities have created professions, rules, economies and autonomous scenarios, keeping Los Santos active without depending solely on official updates. A similar model could find space at Vice City, if Rockstar decided to integrate it directly, using the expertise acquired through Cfx.re. The economic and managerial structure of this possible platform remains at the moment an undefined aspect, with questions relating to content moderation, map properties, project monetization, server independence and compatibility with GTA Online.
