GTA VI PS5: Regional Block with Digital Codes – A Rockstar Controversal Strategy

Using digital activation codes bound to the geographic region for the retail version of GTA 6 on PlayStation 5 (PS5) has raised controversy and concerns among players and industry analysts. Rockstar Games has officially adopted this strategy, limiting access to the game based on your PlayStation Network (PSN) account. Instead of including a physical disk containing all installation data, the physical packaging of GTA 6 for PS5 includes only a digital code. This code must correspond exactly to the geographical region of the player's PSN account. This technical limitation is a significant obstacle for buyers who usually purchase imported copies to optimize costs or frequent travellers. The situation is further complicated by the fact that in Japan, the activation code is subject to restrictions and is valid only for 170 days. Rockstar’s decision reflects a careful strategy to limit the spread of information before the official release of the game and control the leaks of news, a crucial aspect to protect the marketing plan. However, this choice eliminates the traditional advantages of physical games, such as offline installation and the ability to exchange or resell the product. Unlike Xbox and Nintendo, Sony applies a strict policy on regional changes in the PSN account, with potential breaches of the Terms of Service (TOS) for those trying to bypass restrictions through secondary accounts. According to Mike York, former animation designer at Rockstar Games until 2017, this policy is "very bad", attributing its suit to legal norms and uneven distribution policies between Sony and publisher. Despite technical problems and discontent among collectors, York believes that the decision is due to a combination of complex factors.
