Digital Foundry analyzes the graphics of GTA VI on PS5: a triumph of details and reflections

Digital Foundry conducted a thorough technical analysis of a 26-minute demo of Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5, focusing on 1440p resolution and stable frame rate at 30 FPS. The analysis reveals an impressive result: Rockstar Games successfully combined advanced effects such as complex lighting, detailed characters, NPC crowds and a vast open world, making the most of the PS5 capabilities. The Digital Foundry team highlighted the quality of character models. Compared to previous titles, hair simulation is significantly improved: different types of hairstyle react properly to movements and lighting, keeping a certain inertia even after the character stops. A concrete example is that of Lucia Caminos: his hair shows a realistic behavior in response to the movements of the head and body both during the film scenes and during the gameplay. The appearance of the characters' clothes also received great attention. Variable reflections depending on light sources, sweat, make-up and other fine details contribute to a remarkable realism level, especially in the humid climate of Vice City. The use of ray tracing is fundamental The ray tracing plays a key role in GTA VI, but Rockstar did not use this technology for all elements of the image. Most of the solar and local shadows continue to be generated through traditional shadow maps, but with a greatly improved quality: the edges of the shadows become softer as they move away from the object that projects them. In some main scenes, Digital Foundry found the use of RT-ombre, but the emphasis is placed on other ray tracing features. One of these is the rendering of mirrors. Mirrors reflect characters and objects that would not be accessible through Screen Space Reflections, as they are located beyond the current field of view of the camera. Rockstar is combining different technologies. For example, some traditional mirrors could use a planar optimization to achieve the best quality with a lower computational load. RTGI – Global Illumination based on Ray Tracing – plays a crucial role Ray tracing is particularly important in global illumination (Global Illumination), also known as RTGI. Light can be reflected from the surrounding surfaces and influence other objects, taking into account obstacles, geometry of the environments and color of the surfaces. An example is the influence of color on an object on the adjacent surface. This approach is particularly important for GTA VI because of its vast, ever-changing open world. Using pre-calculated lighting in such a dynamic environment would be much more complex. Jason Duval and Raul Bautista were created with the same care and attention to details.
