Rockstar Blocks GTA 6 Mods: "Hard Reset" for Modding

Rockstar Games has significantly strengthened its policies on the mods in view of the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, implementing a new set of rules that drastically limits the freedom of modders. The change, announced earlier this month, aims to preserve the integrity of GTA 6's narrative and official gaming experience, after years when the modding community operated in a gray area. The new protocol, defined by Rockstar with the words "Respect our games", explicitly prohibits changes to the main plot, the cross-game asset and the use of third-party intellectual property. This means that ambitious projects such as creating alternative missions, integrating characters from other Rockstar titles (such as Arthur Morgan in Vice City) or reproduction of urban maps such as Port Gellhorn or Grassrivers, are now banned. The new rules also extend their application to existing Rockstar titles, including GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, reporting a more rigorous approach to managing mods for all its games. In particular, the multiplayer modding will require the use of the official Rockstar Creator Platform, licensed directly from the studio itself, or it will be completely forbidden. In addition, any attempt to bring GTA 6 to platforms other than those officially supported is prohibited. Despite these restrictions, Rockstar clarified that existing policies on monetization of mods (through the Creator Platform) remain valid. However, the main decision seems to be to limit the potential impact on the narrative of GTA 6, creating a more controlled environment for the game and preventing potential alterations of core gameplay.
