GTA VI: The Massive Hack and the Pre-Use Polemics

Grand Theft Auto is one of the most popular video games in the world, developed by Rockstar Games, known for its open worlds and social satire. A few weeks after the release of GTA VI, a massive hack released unpublished footage of the game, triggering a wave of controversy and legal actions. The development of GTA VI began between 2016 and 2018, with a scheduled release date for November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Clips show characters Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos and reveal details about the map of Port Gellhorn, Grassrivers and Mount Kalaga, as well as game mechanics. Despite copyright concerns, many videos remained online. Take-Two counterattack: judicial orders to Microsoft and Discord The company owned by Rockstar, Take-Two Interactive, started legal actions against Microsoft and Discord. Two federal judges in New York ordered the delivery by information companies to identify three accounts involved in video dissemination. Both companies have until September 4 to respond. Rockstar's apparent passiveness in removing content aroused suspicion. With a minimalist marketing (only two trailers and few official images), the hack brought the game to the center of attention. Clips come from a “build”, an executable version of the game in development, suggesting that the material is authentic. The author, known as Cyberleek, included watermarks with protest messages against the sale of the game only in digital format. It is also linked to a cryptocurrency and a paid survey, pushing the Stop Killing Games organization to warn: "Don't send money to these people." The launch is scheduled on November 19 with a basic price of 80 dollars and a special version of $100. Rockstar or Take-Two have issued official statements on the filtered content. Fans expect a formal response. The industry carefully observes this case, which could create precedents on development build protection and the role of digital platforms. The wait for the definitive trailer on Netflix (August 27) is getting more and more intense.
