Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos: Rockstar optimizes the change of characters in GTA VI

The passage between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos will not be available freely in every mission of Grand Theft Auto VI. Rob Nelson, Head of Development and co-responsible Rockstar North, confirmed that the controllable character will depend on the progression of history and the perspective chosen by developers for each sequence. The manager talked about it during an interview with Famitsu after a demonstration of the game. Rockstar provides at least three different configurations. Some missions will allow to freely alternate Jason and Lucia, others will assign to the player a precise protagonist, while certain sequences will impose a passage from one character to another. The freedom of choice will therefore be linked to the structure of the single mission, without applying the same system to the whole campaign. Nelson described an initial mission set in a residential complex. Originally the sequence allowed to change freely protagonist, but during the development Rockstar decided to entrust it entirely to Jason. His past in special forces made the driving role of the action envisaged at that time in history more consistent, leading the team to eliminate free selection. An escape after a bank robbery will instead take a mandatory change. The sequence will begin with Jason engaged to shoot against the flyers from the car led by Lucia; the control will then pass to the latter, while Jason and Raul will continue to fire from the back seat. Another mission shown during the demonstration instead allowed the two protagonists to alternate at the discretion of the player. The relationship between Jason and Lucia is one of the central elements of history. Rockstar had evaluated a structure with four playable characters, before focusing on the couple to devote more time and narrative depth to both. The management of the protagonists will reflect this choice, alternating the respective perspectives when required by the story and leaving greater freedom in the missions built around their collaboration. The campaign will be divided into chapters and will begin in Leonida Keys, then lead Jason and Lucia through other areas of the imaginary state of Leonida, including Vice City, already at the center of the presentation of Grand Theft Auto VI. The couple's shelters will also change with progression, following an evolution comparable to that of the Red Dead Redemption 2 camps. The release is scheduled for 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
