Watermark on trial copies of GTA VI? Digital Foundry's analysis reveals the problem

A new analysis of Digital Foundry raises a crucial question for GTA VI pre-orders: trial copies for reviews could be contaminated by a watermark. Although Rockstar Games has confirmed that the title will give the best of itself on PS5, the issue of actual performance remains outstanding. According to Digital Foundry, the hypothesis of a Quality/Prestation 60 fps mode is unlikely, based on the trailers and screenshots shown so far. The game could opt for different visual presets while anchoring at 30 fps, or introducing an intermediate mode to 40 fps. The true bottleneck does not reside in the graphics, but in the CPU. The open world of GTA VI, with its PNGs, traffic, physics and environmental simulations, requires high computing power, especially when traveling at high speed by car, boat or plane. Digital Foundry compares the situation to recent titles such as Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3, where the crowded areas stress modern hardware. The analysis suggests that reaching a stable frame rate at 60 fps on GTA VI would be extremely difficult, given the scale of detail and complexity of the game. This is no coincidence: titles such as GTA IV, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 have all bet at 30 fps at launch, while GTA 5 has then received a 60 fps update on more recent hardware. Historically, Rockstar has always favoured the visual quality and detail of the world of play compared to a high frame rate at launch. The PS5 Pro might look like the ideal platform to push on the frames, but according to the report its improvements mainly concern the graphic sector: a more powerful GPU, improved ray tracing performance and PSSR overscaling support. However, the PS5 Pro CPU is only slightly faster than the standard PS5. Since GTA VI seems to be strongly limited by CPU, GPU side improvements may not be enough to bring the game to 60 fps. A 40 fps mode remains, according to Digital Foundry, the most realistic hypothesis even on PS5 Pro.
