Rockstar imposes regional block on PS5 for GTA VI – Xbox free from geographical restrictions

With the approach of 19 November 2026, the date of release planned for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar Games has officialized a decision that is already creating a heated debate in the video game community. The company has confirmed that the PlayStation 5 version of the game will be distributed exclusively via digital downloads, excluding the sale on physical media. This choice is accompanied by a rigorous regional block applied to activation codes for the Sony console, while Xbox Series X|S users will not be subject to such geographical limitations. Rockstar's official communication, spread through the game's support page, states that GTA VI's digital codes for PlayStation 5 can only be activated on PlayStation Network accounts registered in the same code purchasing region. A concrete example is that of Turkey: a code purchased in Turkey will work exclusively on a Turkish account, making the code for an Italian user unusable. This measure, Rockstar explains, derives from alignment to commercial policies and territorial licenses of Sony. The decision has direct consequences on the common practice of purchasing games in markets with more advantageous prices, such as Argentina, Turkey or Brazil. Up until now, many users were circumventing the high costs of the European market by creating accounts in these geographical areas. With the new regional block for PlayStation 5, this strategy becomes impossible for GTA VI. Those who own an Italian account cannot activate a code purchased elsewhere, unless they create a second account in the region of origin of the code – a complex and potentially risky solution. Xbox Series X|S Freedom of choice without restrictions On the Microsoft front, the situation is radically different. Rockstar Games confirmed that the GTA VI digital codes for Xbox Series X|S will not be subject to regional blocking. A user can purchase the game from anywhere in the world and activate it on their Xbox account, regardless of the region of residence. This policy, in line with Microsoft's global strategy, transforms the platform's choice into a determining factor for many portfolio-conscious players. The difference between the two consoles is clear: while PlayStation 5 owners will be bound to their local market and associated prices, Xbox users will continue to benefit from the benefits of the global market, purchasing codes from regions with lower taxation or exclusive promotions. This asymmetry, already discussed on online forums, could significantly affect purchasing decisions.
