Digital Foundry sets the hopes of GTA 6 to 60fps: "Too ambitious"

When an expected game as Grand Theft Auto VI approaches the date of release, speculations do nothing but increase. Recently, product cards appeared on online dealer sites had fueled the hope of a 60 frames per second mode on current generation consoles. However, Digital Foundry's technical analysis, conducted by Will Judd, highlighted a very different picture. Judd examined the available materials, concluding that the level of visual detail required makes it extremely difficult to imagine a scaling of resources to allow fluidity to 60fps. The crucial point is the CPU. The PS5 and Xbox Series X & S consoles, despite being released almost six years ago, represent a significant computational load for an open world game as dense as GTA VI, especially considering the impact of the player's speed of movement requiring continuous management of huge amounts of data. Digital Foundry then provides a 30fps output on all console platforms. Even those who own a PS5 Pro would not have reasons for excessive optimism: the Pro variant offers improvements, especially on Ray Tracing and with PSSR, but the CPU performance leap compared to the base model is minimal. Digital Foundry assumes a 40fps mode on PS5 Pro, a value still unconfirmed by Rockstar. The history of the development of GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 provides an additional confirmation item: Rockstar Games has always favoured the density and complexity of the world of play compared to the frequency of updating the image, a stylistic and technical choice that seems destined to repeat itself. In addition to the hopes of fluidity, there are rumors about physical versions of GTA 6, which were unfounded: Rockstar Games decided to distribute the game exclusively in digital format, a choice that raised some criticisms among traditional fans and brought some retailers to refuse the title.
