Russia calls for the ban on GTA VI for “imical content” and male strippers

Grand Theft Auto 6 is at the heart of a new political controversy, especially in Russia. A member of the World Russian People’s Council formally requested the ban on the game in the country, accusing it of promoting “destructive and immoral” content, particularly regarding sexual representation. If the request was received, Rockstar Games would lose access to a potential market of over 140 million players. The controversy focuses on the concerns expressed by Mikhail Ivanov, vice-president of the World Russian People’s Council, which defines the game “a particularly dangerous instrument of influence”, stressing the need to protect young people from the alleged moral corruption caused by the media. Ivanov openly criticizes Rockstar Games for the inclusion of content considered “destructive and vulgar”, incompatible with the moral health of society, in line with the history of the franchise that has previously been banned in Thailand, Malaysia and United Arab Emirates due to issues related to the representation of crimes and controversial behaviors. The focal point of criticism is the expected inclusion of male strippers in the game, considered a “direct and cynical translation of fundamental moral norms”. Although the Grand Theft Auto franchise is historically associated with potentially controversial content – such as robberies, murders, chases – and the previous “Hot Coffee” has raised controversy regarding sexual content, specific attention to scenes of male stripping has also generated concern within the LGBTQIA+ community, considering the Russian regulatory environment, where there are restrictions on pro-LGBTQIA+ activism. Despite the demand, it seems unlikely that GTA 6 is actually banned.
