Miami: An Economic and Cultural Analysis of the City – New Projects on GTA VI

Miami is a coastal town located in the south-eastern part of the American state of Florida. It represents the second most populous city in Florida, with about 442.241 inhabitants in 2020, and the metropolitan area of Miami has an estimated population of 6.39 million people, ranking as the fifth largest metropolitan area in the south-east of the United States and eighth at the national level. The city boasts a skyline of more than 300 skyscrapers, with 70 meters of height. Miami is an important city center and leader in finance, commerce, culture, arts and international trade. The economy of the metropolitan area of Miami represents the largest urban economy in Florida, with a gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023 equal to $533.674 billion. In 2018, a UBS study of 77 cities worldwide ranked Miami as the third wealthiest city in the United States and the third globally in terms of purchasing power. The ethnic composition of the city is characterized by a strong presence of minorities, with 70.2% of the population that is identified as ispanic or Latin American. The Downtown Miami neighborhood focuses a high concentration of international banks and hosts numerous large national and international companies. The Health District, in particular, is home to important facilities at the University of Miami, including the Jackson Memorial Hospital, the largest in the United States with 1.547 beds, the Miller School of Medicine and other institutions dedicated to health care and research. PortMiami, the sea port of the city, is the busiest cruise port in the world in terms of passengers and number of cruise companies. The Miami Metro Area is the second most visited metropolitan area in the United States after New York City, with over four million visitors in 2022. Given its strong commercial and cultural connection with Latin America, and its predominantly Hispanic population (70%), Miami was called "Access to Latin America" or even "Capital of Latin America". The name of Miami comes from the Miami River, derived from the name Mayaimi, the historical name of Lake Okeechobee and the Native Americans living around it. It is interesting to note that, as mentioned above, the city is sometimes referred to as “Vice City”, a reference to the area in which the action of GTA VI takes place.
