Matsuyama (CyberConnect2): “The physical disks are destined to disappear, GTA 6 will only be digital”

The video game industry is rapidly evolving and the opinions of developers play a crucial role in debate the future of the industry. Hiroshi Matsuyama, CEO of CyberConnect2 (responsible of series such as Naruto Ultimate Ninja and .hack), expressed his belief that the abandonment of physical supports is inevitable and beneficial to all actors involved. In a post on X, Matsuyama argued that digital games offer greater profitability and lower distribution costs, pointing out that its company should bear significant costs for the production of physical copies intended for Nintendo and Sony. The CEO points out that the cultural preference for physical copies is declining, recognizing their reduced convenience compared to digital alternatives. Matsuyama mentions concrete examples such as Capcom and Square Enix, where 90% of sales come from digital, and claims that developers should receive adequate salaries without having to support disk costs for a minority of collectors. The switch to digital format, according to him, will eliminate physical packaging, making games more accessible and convenient. The statement resounds particularly in the context of the launch of GTA VI of Rockstar Games, distributed exclusively with downloadable code within the case, a choice motivated by the considerable dimensions of the game (“too large to enter a physical disk”, as Matsuyama stated). The transition to digital presents itself as well as the optimal solution to ensure maximum profitability to developers and provide players with easier and faster access to their favorite titles.
