GTA VI: Rockstar Increases NPC Complexity to 600,000 Dedicated Animations

Grand Theft Auto VI promises a qualitative leap in environmental realism, thanks to a disconcerting figure: over 600,000 animations dedicated to secondary characters. The news, attributed to a co-director of the study, shows a significant increase compared to the previous chapter, Grand Theft Auto V (with about 55.000 animations), and even Red Dead Redemption 2 (300.000). The key to change lies in the development method adopted by Rockstar: instead of relying on generative algorithms, a broad team of artists individually created each secondary character, defining his personality, his reactions and his behavior. Passers of Vice City will not be simple static figures, but individuals with their own lives, who react to the player's actions dynamically and crediblely. As the same co-director explains, he worked to define every detail of the characters: where they sit in the rooms, what they drink, the objects they hold in hand, even the tattoos they carry. This artisanal approach, supported by an entire office dedicated to Los Angeles, aims to create a more live and immersive game world than the past. Despite the impressive amount of animations, Rockstar has not released precise figures on other aspects of the system, such as the number of passers-bys that are together, the distance to which the characters are detailed or the differences between versions per console. These key data remain wrapped in mystery, leaving the player waiting to fully discover the impact of this revolution in exploration and interaction in GTA VI.
