A few months after the world premiere of Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for 19 November 2026, Rockstar North's former technical director Obbe Vermeij revealed unpublished details about the final quality control process of the GTA series. Vermeij, who from 1995 to 2009 led Rockstar North's technical team, described a consolidated practice: two weeks before the launch of each game, Rockstar suspended development and the entire team dedicated itself to playing the "gold" version of the title, precisely to identify the latest bugs. The procedure, which included programmers and artists playing the title for eight hours a day with headphones in different departments, had begun with GTA III and continued until GTA IV. The team tried to experience every mission in order, living history and identifying anomalies that would otherwise have escaped during normal development. Vermeij stressed that this phase, often underestimated, was crucial to guarantee an impeccable gaming experience. According to Vermeij on X: “Working at GTA 3, Vice City, SA and GTA 4 was more like a normal job than people imagine. Most of us worked with headphones in their own area: graphics, programming, music, for 8 hours a day. We had very few meetings. Only a small number of people made important decisions regarding gameplay and plot. Especially towards the end, most of the work consisted of correcting an endless set of bugs. ” This practice, which planned to stop working two weeks before the final release, was aimed at ensuring that each mission was played in order and that the gaming experience was as smooth as possible.
