Grand Theft Auto: a legacy of over half a billion copies sold – analysis of the main titles
Grand Theft Auto (series) is a milestone in the video industry, with a success story started in 1997. The series, developed by Rockstar North and Rockstar Leeds and published by Rockstar Games, focuses on the role of an uprising outlaw within organized crime, offering players the freedom to explore open world recreated with manic minutia. The name "Grand Theft Auto" refers, in fact, to the common crime of vehicle theft, a central element in the first titles. At 2026, the saga reached over 475 million copies sold worldwide, positioning itself as the fifth best-selling series ever, behind Mario, Tetris, Pokémon and Call of Duty. The first chapter (Grand Theft Auto) introduces Liberty City, San Andreas and Vice City, with gameplay focused on the exploration of the city, the confrontation with the police and the possibility of earning money by stealing and selling vehicles. Gran Theft Auto II takes place in Anywhere City, consisting of three islands where seven gangs fight for domination. The player, impersonating Claude Speed, must interact with the different gangs, completing missions and trying to get respect to access more complex assignments. Grand Theft Auto III sees Claude as a driver of a gang of robbers, and puts him in trouble for a betrayal that forces him to escape from prison, starting an adventure full of dangers and twists.
