GTA VI: 1.5 Millions of Americans Could Take the Pagella for Launch

The expectation for GTA VI, scheduled for 19 November 2026, is creating a potential impact on the US economy. According to an estimate of the economist José García Montalvo of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, approximately 1.5 million American workers may be absent from work or take a day off during the launch of the game. This could cause an estimated productivity loss to $1 billion. The economist Montalvo developed the estimate based on the possible behaviour of US workers, considering the scheduled debut for Thursday 19 November 2026, offering players a weekend dedicated to the game. It is not an official forecast or a data confirmed by a national investigation. The figure of 1.5 million people has become viral, feeding the wait for GTA VI. Although the calculation is based on an estimate of the average value of economic production generated by an American worker (about $70.000 per year), it is important to note that there is no publicly available data to verify the methodology used. It is therefore an estimate of the potential economic impact, rather than a certain and definitive loss. Already before the launch of GTA VI there were examples of players who programmed days of holidays near the date of release, a phenomenon not entirely unusual in the video industry. It remains to be seen how the enthusiasm for GTA VI will lead to this type of work absence.
