Why did Nintendo choose to challenge GTA 6 with Zelda? – Expert analysis

Aakash Gupta, former producer of Fortnite at Epic Games and product growth expert, explains Nintendo's decision to release the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time a short distance from Grand Theft Auto VI. Gupta's analysis focuses on two key elements: the exclusivity of the Switch 2 console and the potential reduction of the overlap between the public of the two titles, as they are intended for different hardware. The launch of Ocarina of Time on November 5, with 19 days ahead of GTA VI (out November 19), allowed Nintendo to take full advantage of its position in an already crowded calendar, as Gupta suggests, comparing the situation to a street where a “great truck” – Rockstar Games – forces others to exterminate. Gupta emphasizes the importance of the original reputation: Ocarina of Time has a score of 99 on Metacritic, a recognition that the remake can exploit together with the loyalty of Japanese fans. The expert also highlights the reaction of the television audience, with the applause aimed at Link, interpreted as a demonstration of the recognisability of an icon born in 1986, able to overcome the traditional channels of communication related to the world of video games. Gupta has even defined the comparison between Link and Jason Duval (GTA VI's protagonist) a "Barbenheimer" of video games, recalling the film phenomenon born around Barbie and Oppenheimer, emphasizing the immediate attention that the Nintendo character has aroused in television.
