Sony reworks the GTA 6 advertising campaign after the flop of the physical version

After a clamorous marketing error, Sony is forced to rethink its promotional strategy for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), the new title of Rockstar Games. The problem? Pre-orders of the physical version of the game did not include a paper copy, generating confusion among consumers. The company found itself having to quickly remove previous advertising materials that showed the PS5 with a CD player and the hashtag “plays best on PS5”, having to replace them with messages that exclusively promoted the digital edition for PlayStation 5. The confusion was rooted in the fact that Rockstar Games had already communicated the details and prices of the game on PS5, anticipating a distribution model focused on digital versions, without including the physical component. Despite this unexpected twist, the strategic partnership between Sony and Rockstar Games remains a key element for the success of GTA 6. The continuing promotion of the PS5 as an ideal platform for the game, including the emphasis on the slogan "play best on PS5", is seen by many as a smart move. According to rumors from Take-Two Interactive, the company management, led by Strauss Zelnick, had already planned an important marketing agreement with Sony in May 2026. GTA 6 packages are available for PS5 or PS5 Pro, with particular attention to performance, such as 60 frames per second (fps), which could boost sales. Rockstar Games’ change of strategy also raised concerns among collectors and in the market of use. The lack of physical versions of the game, with prices starting from 80-100 dollars, makes it difficult for fans to exhibit their collection. In addition, the exclusive use of download codes complicates the sale of used copies, a particularly relevant aspect for a title focused mainly on single-player modes such as GTA 6.
