GTA VI: the empty box – An alarm bell for console fans?

The distribution of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) is unusual: empty boxes, only digital code. Rockstar has chosen to distribute the game exclusively through access with subscription or digital purchase, a choice that has raised controversy and concerns within the community, especially that console. The purchase of the game will be available both in physical version (with case containing code) and digital, but the sale of empty boxes – containing only a code for access to the game – surprised many fans accustomed to the experience of physical purchase and the collection of confants. This approach is reflected in a fracture between console and pc gamer communities, where digitalization is more advanced in computer gaming. The announcement of the definitive closure of the production of physical disks for Playstation in January 2028, by Sony, represents a further turning point in this sense. Although phenomena like this "empty box" of GTA 6 witness a transition to digital even in the console world, the decision raises doubts about the future gaming experience for fans who prefer the purchase of the physical disk and the collection of confants. The Steam lesson, a reference point in PC gaming, has shown how digitization can dominate the video game industry, leaving a shadow of the preferences of a significant part of the community console.
