GTA VI: former developer Rockstar reveals the challenges of a version for Switch 2

The launch of GTA VI is scheduled for November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the PC that will have to wait. Fans’ enthusiasm is palpable, but doubts arise on other platforms, especially on the Nintendo Switch 2. The issue is more concrete thanks to a recent interview by Jérémy Hartvick, former developer Rockstar, which highlights the technical and strategic difficulties related to the adaptation of the game to this console. Hartvick emphasizes that the Switch 2, although more powerful than the first generation, remains distant from the next-gen console capabilities of Sony and Xbox. The main problem lies in the compatibility of a complex title like GTA 6, designed for much more performing hardware, with a platform that has to balance portability, battery autonomy and limited performance. In addition to technical considerations, Hartvick highlights the question of the target audience. The Nintendo user base, accustomed to lighter, colorful and accessible games, may not be the ideal recipient for a title like GTA 6. Investing resources to adapt the game to this console without the certainty of a good economic return would represent a significant risk. The decision therefore goes beyond the simple technical feasibility: it is a strategic choice regarding the size of the market and the adaptation of the product to the reference public. The Rockstar development team will have to carefully evaluate whether to focus on platforms with a consolidated audience or risk new markets, such as the Nintendo.
