ShipShaper: Tomas Sala sled the exit due to GTA 6, but does not give up

The wait for GTA VI is affecting the plans of ShipShaper, the new naval simulator developed by Tomas Sala, author of The Falconeer and Bulwark. Originally planned for a launch at the beginning of 2026, ShipShaper will now enter early access on September 2, well before the official release of GTA VI set to November 19. Sala, interviewed by GamesIndustry.biz, admits that the hype around the new Rockstar Games game has created significant pressure among indie developers. The idea of having to complete your project before the launch of GTA 6 has generated stress and delayed the initial plans. However, the solo developer does not consider the Rockstar blockbuster a direct threat to indie titles. GTA VI is aimed at a very specific audience, away from fans of simulators or narrative building games, while its unavailability on PC – a fundamental platform for many independent games – represents a strategic advantage for ShipShaper. The game allows players to design and build boats, a precise niche with a public willing to invest in specialized content. For Sala, success is not measured in millions of copies sold or in media titles, but in the creation of a stable and faithful player base. This philosophy is already demonstrated by Bulwark, who has surpassed The Falconeer in daily sales. After ShipShaper, Sala is planning an open world adventure set in the universe of The Falconeer, maintaining creative freedom and focusing on a small passionate community. An additional detail: the next official trailer of GTA VI will be available on Netflix.
