Rockstar launches the Collector’s Edition “Vice City Leonida” at $399.99: a quarter of the Red Dead 2 price

Today Rockstar Games revealed the "Vice City Leonida" Collection, a Collector's Edition of GTA VI at $399.99, which does not include the game. Preorders are already available for the launch of 19 November, exclusively for North America and Europe. Learn how to pre-order the full edition will soon be shared for Asia, Latin America and Australia; Rockstar also anticipated the imminent arrival of additional clothing and GTA VI collection items in the store. Complete boxes without the game are not new at all: Rockstar was the pioneer of the modern version. Red Dead Redemption 2's Collector's Box cost $99.99 and did not include the game, explaining that it was not a game edition but a separate additional package that players could match to the desired, physical or digital version. Blizzard followed the same logic. Diablo IV's Limited Collector's Box cost $96.66 and included no copy of the game, not even in-game codes, which were instead linked to digital purchases. Blizzard also presented this as a way for players to match the desired digital edition with physical merchandising and the box did not arrive until June 30, more than three weeks after the game was launched. EA brought an even more daring move with the Mass Effect Legendary Cache, released along with the legendary edition in May 2021: its core was a 1:1 scale reproduction of the Shepard helmet, and included a steel case for the game but without the game itself, not even a download code. Considered all this, the price of the Collector's Edition GTA VI “Vice City Leonida” – which is around four times that of Red Dead Redemption 2 or Diablo IV – seems a considerable investment compared to the editions of collectors offered by Sony for its latest blockbusters, which cost between 230 and $250 and included at least one digital copy of the game. If you go back to a generation, the contrast is even more evident: the Collector's Edition of Grand Theft Auto V debuted at just $149.99 in 2013, and also includes the game.
