Trailer GTA VI on Netflix: an exclusive payment for the biggest hype in history

Rockstar Games' decision to release the new trailer of Grand Theft Auto VI exclusively on Netflix triggered a heated debate, raising questions about the role of marketing and the intensity of the hype surrounding the title. A trailer, by definition, is an advertising, but making this content accessible only to Netflix subscribers further amplifies the expectation and willingness to pay by fans. The debate focuses on transparency between advertising content and game promotion. Rockstar Games, in announcing the partnership with Netflix, opted for the term "extended look", a choice that further confuses the waters between direct marketing and promotional material presentation. Most likely, it will be a classic trailer, perhaps in deep-dive format, extremely popular in the world of video games. The appointment is scheduled for Thursday, August 27 at 21:00 Italian, when Netflix will host this exclusive "extended look" of Grand Theft Auto VI, accessible only to those who own a subscription to the platform. Although you can expect versions of the trailer on YouTube, its online availability will be limited over time. The most fascinating element of this operation is the marketing masterpiece that Rockstar Games and Netflix are putting in place: transforming an advertising into a product to sell, a short circuit that made shout "genius" to many industry observers. The question that arises now is whether there are actually people willing to pay to watch a trailer of a game. If the answer is affirmative, then the video industry has touched a turning point. The wait lasted 13 years from Grand Theft Auto V in 2013, with Brandon Riegg, vice president of Netflix’s nonfiction series, which emphasizes the cultural importance and the unprecedented hype around GTA VI (“The Grand Theft Auto presentations became real cultural moments”), further strengthens this trend. The story of the new chapter will follow Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, involved in a robbery. GTA VI will be available from November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
