Grand Theft Auto VI: a thirty-year legacy of freedom and chaos

Every generation of gaming enthusiasts had its moment of rebellion and pure freedom, and for decades Rockstar Games was the architect. The wait for Grand Theft Auto 6 reaches unprecedented levels, not only for hyper marketing, but for a heritage of almost thirty years in which the franchise offered open world experiences that redefine the canons of the genre. A constant evolution from the first title to the next iteration. Starts: from top to bottom In 1997, when Rockstar North was still DMA Design, the debut of Grand Theft Auto on PS1 was a turning point. With a view from the top and settings in Liberty City, Vice City and San Andreas – names that would dominate the geography of the franchise for decades – the game immediately expelled disputes, feeding a debate that contributed to its success. The original title, even with its defects, laid the foundations of unprecedented freedom: a city to be explored freely, missions that offered unbounded objectives and the possibility to embrace chaos. GTA 2 (1999) introduced crucial elements for the entire series: health bar, manual rescue, secondary missions, vehicle customization and city-wide collectibles. If taken individually were not innovative, the set of these mechanics defined the perfect template for later titles. The turning point PS2 This is where the franchise has turned from niche to cultural force. GTA 3 (2001) marked the move to the full 3D and revolutionized the open world genre, offering a Liberty City that seemed really habitable. The plot featured a cast of high-profile dubbings including Kyle MacLachlan and Michael Madsen, with a silent protagonist immersed in a dynamic and vibrant world. GTA: Vice City (2002) consecrated the franchise with a licensed soundtrack from the 1980s and an iconic neon aesthetic that defined the visual style of the game. Ray Liotta voiced Tommy Vercetti. The game, more sold than all titles of the year, set new standards. Finally, GTA: San Andreas (2004) greatly expanded the map - exceeding the combined dimensions of Liberty City and Vice City - without charge during exploration. He introduced swimming, stealth mechanics, character customization through hair cuts and clothing, and a progressive RPG style skill system. Some players still consider it the best in the series.
