Game of the Year for GTA VI? The nightmare of short-term votes

The new chapter of the Grand Theft Auto saga, finally arriving on November 19, 2026, could be penalized in his attempt to get the prestigious Game of the Year award at The Game Awards. The issue emerged quickly, fueled by doubts about timing and the real possibilities of the game to compete effectively. Alanah Pearce, actress, author of games and ex-video journalist, raised the problem during a recent live stream, highlighting how historically the deadlines for the TGA nominations often coincide with the release of very expected titles like GTA 6. The main problem lies in the fact that the cutoff for nominations has not yet been officially communicated, creating a crucial uncertainty. Some experts pointed out that, although the deadline had fallen two days after the launch (November 21, of the previous year), the time offered to the jurors to evaluate the game would have been insufficient given the ambition of Rockstar Games in creating vast and complex open worlds. Asking anyone to form a credible opinion in less than two days is, according to many, an unrealistic operation that raises legitimate doubts about the integrity of the voting process. The central question is whether the jury members would actually be able to assess the game based on the first impressions, given the brevity of the period. This scenario is no longer a mere hypothesis, but a concrete question that is feeding reflections within the community of awards. Rockstar and Keighley could take two paths: the first, involves Geoff Keighley, who runs The Game Awards, which could postpone the voting window. This option presents a practical incentive since a triumph of GTA 6 would bring a huge audience to the ceremony. The second option is Rockstar: provide early access to jury members before public launch. This approach, standard in the practice of reviews, would become even more strategic if concentrated exclusively on premium voters with an accelerated timing. At the moment, no official statement was issued by Rockstar or The Game Awards on these issues, but the 2027 is already announced as an interesting year.
