GTA VI: Ex Manufacturer Rockstar Prefigures Difficulty to Reach 60 FPS on Console

By GTA6 Hub editorial team

A former Rockstar Games technical director, John Ricchio, raised doubts about the possibility that GTA VI reaches stable 60 FPS frame rate on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles at launch. The statements, which emerged from a podcast with Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly, concern the challenge of maintaining a high refresh rate on current hardware, given the ambition and vastness of GTA 6 and its complex simulation. Ricchio suggests that Rockstar could favour graphical fidelity and object density compared to a constant frame rate, a choice consistent with the manufacturer's strategies in launching important titles for consoles, often initially limiting the frame rate to 30 FPS before offering a 60 FPS mode as a next patch. Indiscretions from retailers' cards and Digital Foundry support these considerations. Digital Foundry has evidenced that CPU requirements are the main bottleneck, given the huge computational power needed to reproduce the open world of GTA 6, intense traffic and simulated physics at high speeds (car, boat, plane). The speculations on a 40 FPS mode on the PS5 Pro, made possible by an enhanced GPU but with a CPU not significantly faster than the standard PS5, are plausible. In another news, the updated Xbox Store tabs suggest the possibility to separately download the story mode and GTA Online, offering players flexibility to save storage space when they switch to GTA Online. Rockstar has not yet released comments on this potential option.
