GTA VI: Rockstar aims to free missions from restrictive control – Rob Nelson announcements

By GTA6 Hub editorial team

Rockstar Games is known for its vast open worlds, where players enjoy freedom of action often interrupted by missions with precise goals. Traditionally, deviating from the planned path or attempting unconventional approaches could lead to the immediate failure of the mission, frustrating many fans who criticized this restrictive design. As evidenced in discussions about Reddit dedicated to Red Dead Redemption 2, the paradox was clear: a free and unlimited exploration collided with rigidity in narrative missions. Rockstar seems to face this criticism in GTA VI (available for pre-order on Amazon). Speaking with IGN, Rockstar developer Rob Nelson explained that the studio is deliberately working to offer greater flexibility during the missions, without compromising the film narrative that characterizes the series. Nelson mentions the Extended Look as an example, where Jason and Lucia must escape from a skyscraper. Instead of being forced to follow a single predetermined path, players will have different options to go out. For example, on a mission with Raul, at first Jason shoots from a moving car while Lucia is at the wheel; the game suggests an optimal escape route but does not impose it, leaving players the freedom to sow the police and complete the mission as they prefer. The general goal is to make history missions a more natural extension of the open world. Rockstar predicts that car chases and robberies will follow the same rules, both during predefined narrative sequences, and during free exploration. While maintaining control over the crucial moments of the plot, the company aims to replicate the freedom of action that made GTA iconic.
