Rockstar aims at a more flexible approach to the GTA VI missions – Eliminating the Critics of the Previous Games
Rockstar Games is known for its vast open worlds, offering players unprecedented freedom. However, this same level of freedom is often interrupted during the missions of history, where restrictive game design can lead to sudden failures if the player deviates from the intended path or adopts unconventional approaches. This criticism, heard for years by fans, has found a wide match on platforms like Reddit. As evidenced in a four-year discussion of Red Dead Redemption 2, the frustration of players comes from the fact that they are forced to follow a default path within scripted missions, while they have unlimited freedom in the free exploration of the world. Rockstar seems willing to solve this problem in GTA VI (available for pre-order on Amazon). Speaking with IGN, Rockstar developer Rob Nelson explained that the company is deliberately working to offer players greater flexibility during the missions, without sacrificing the film narrative that characterizes the series. For example, a mission already shown in the Extended Look – the one in which Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos must escape from a skyscraper – will allow players to choose between different escape methods instead of being forced to follow a single predetermined path. Nelson also cited a mission with Raul Bautista, where players can choose their own method to sow the police and complete it in the way they prefer, although the game initially suggests an optimal escape route. This strategy is part of a broader commitment to make history's missions a natural extension of the open world. Rockstar intends to ensure that car chases and robberies follow the same basic rules, both during predefined sequences and during free exploration. This does not mean that predefined sequences will disappear completely, but that missions will be more adaptable to player behavior.
