Rockstar unveils the past of Jason Duval: “We do not want to make statements”

The first revelations about the background of the protagonist of GTA VI, Jason Duval, come directly from Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of the narrative of the game. The interview released to Love magazine shed light on a crucial aspect of character building and Rockstar’s narrative strategy for the new title. Humphries made it clear that Jason's story is not a declaration of intent, but rather a consequence of his material circumstances. The protagonist, described as an ex-military who " grew up among ambushes and criminals" and who spent a time in the army to "freeze from his difficult years", returns to devote himself to drug trafficking and robbery – choices dictated by his environment. The encounter with Lucia Caminos, the other protagonist of the game, called “the best or worst thing that can ever happen to him”, represents a narrative element open to interpretations. Humphries' response raises questions about the role of the military past of Jason Duval, suggesting that it may not be central in narrative. However, the senior vice president emphasizes that Jason's choice is dictated by his personality and circumstances, leaving the player the freedom to decide whether or not to follow the lead. Humphries also referred to the themes already explored in the previous iterations of the saga, in particular to the criticism of the illusion of the American Dream present in GTA 4 and in the "cynicity" of GTA 5. Rockstar therefore seems willing to maintain a balance between realism and entertainment, recognizing that “too realism can be tedious” and preferring to prioritize the player’s experience.
