Rockstar unveils plans for Jason Duval: “We didn’t want to make statements”

According to the senior vice president of narrative of GTA VI, Rupert Humphries, the story of Jason Duval, one of the protagonists of the new game, was not conceived as a social criticism. In an interview with Love magazine, Humphries made it clear that Rockstar did not intend to express “a message” through the military past of Jason, described as “a man raised between crooks and criminals”, with a “stint in army” to leave behind his teenage problems, before returning to “do what he knows best: work for drug traffickers”. The encounter with Lucia Caminos, the other protagonist of the game – “it could be the best or worst thing ever happened to him” – remains a key element to reveal. Humphries added that Jason's violent actions (trafficking drug and robber) are dictated by his material circumstances, leaving the player the freedom to decide whether he has to take such measures or whether he is different from others. A surprising answer, especially because it suggests that Jason's military background may not have a central role in the plot – an aspect to check. The discussion then referred to the recurring theme of American Dream in the GTA series, citing GTA 4 and its “sarchism” on the illusion of the land of American opportunities, doubled with the cynicism of GTA 5. Humphries points out that Rockstar had to "renounce realism" to ensure an immersive experience for players: "Reality helps dive, but too much can be tedious."
