Digital Foundry unveils the secrets of the trailer of GTA VI: upscaling and RTGI as keys to graphics

In an in-depth analysis of the second trailer, Digital Foundry highlighted some key aspects of GTA VI's graphics. Rockstar Games made it clear that the images were shot on a PlayStation 5, meaning an optimal presentation of the title for users. However, the high graphic level led the Digital Foundry team to investigate more in detail, revealing a perhaps not completely transparent approach. According to the analysis, Rockstar Games made the trailer with a resolution of 4K to 30fps. The perplexity emerges from the nature of the image, which seems excessively detailed and could be the result of a spatial upscaler used to achieve this qualitative level. This would suggest that much of the gameplay was not captured in real time directly on the base PS5. The rendering of light sources is particularly careful, with clean frames that enhance the protagonists, especially in the lighting scenes of Vice City and in alternating between sun and neon lights during the day and night. Digital Foundry experts believe that due to the high graphic detail, GTA VI can turn in 4K to 30 FPS but will not support the 60 FPS mode at the exit. The use of global ray tracing (RTGI) greatly contributes to the realistic rendering of lights and environments, with luminous scenes such as those of Vice City that stand out for dynamic and engaging lighting. Despite optimization, the graphical complexity of the game could be a challenge for the desired high frame rate performance.
