GTA VI: Empty Box Scandal and Digital Future in Box

The announcement of the distribution of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) through empty boxes triggered a wave of reactions among fans, highlighting a growing fracture between developers and the community of console players. The decision to sell only cases containing a code for the digital download of the game, rather than include a physical disk, is likely to alienate a significant part of the audience accustomed to the traditional experience of buying the title on tangible support – in particular, the owners of PlayStation and Xbox. The controversy is also fueled by the fact that, despite the global trend towards digital in the video industry, the console world seems to slow adoption. While the PC gamers community has long been immersed in the purchase of digital games through platforms such as Steam, the transition to full download remains slower among console players, who continue to prefer the purchase of physical pads to collect and store their games. The announcement of the definitive closure of Sony's production of physical disks (predicted in January 2028) represents a further step in this trend, but it only accentuates the sense of surprise and, for some, of frustration among fans of GTA 6. The “empty box” thus becomes a symbol of the difficulty of Rockstar Games and publishing houses in finding the balance between the needs of the growing digital market and nostalgia for the physical gaming experience, a central element in the culture of video games for many fans. As David Bordwell points out, "films have become files", and the case of GTA 6 seems to announce a future dominated by digital download, despite the resistances of a part of the community.
