Grand Theft Auto VI: A Success and Innovation legacy

Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is a first-person adventure video game created by David Jones and Mike Dailly. The following titles were developed under the supervision of the brothers Dan and Sam Houser, with the contribution of Leslie Benzies and Aaron Garbut. The development is mainly entrusted to Rockstar North, a British company (formerly DMA Design), and its American mother house, Rockstar Games. The name of the series comes from the American term to indicate car theft. The gameplay is based on an open world where the player can complete missions to advance the main plot and participate in various secondary activities. Most of the game revolves around driving and shooting, with occasional role-playing and stealth elements. The series also draws on the elements of the classic 'em up beats of the 1980s-90s. The GTA games are set in fictitious locations modeled on real cities, between the early 1960s and 2010. The first game featured three main cities – Liberty City (inspired in New York), San Andreas (based on San Francisco) and Vice City (model of Miami) – but later iterations tend to focus on a single setting, expanding the original places. Each game presents several protagonists who try to advance into the criminal world, often accompanied by themes of betrayal. Veterinary actors gave their voice to the characters in the series, including Ray Liotta, Dennis Hopper, Burt Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, William Fichtner, James Woods and Peter Fonda; as well as celebrities such as Debbie Harry, Lazlow Jones, Phil Collins, Axl Rose, Dr. Dre, and Anderson .Paak. DMA Design, based in Dundee, launched the series in 1997 with Grand Theft Auto. By 2020 [update], the series counts seven main titles and four expansions. Grand Theft Auto III, released in 2001, is considered a revolutionary title, as it first introduced the three-dimensional environment in the series. Later titles continued to develop the format established by GTA III, receiving broad consensus. The series influenced other open-world games and gave rise to the label "GTA clone" on similar games [4]. Despite disputes related to its adult nature, violent themes and cut content, the series has been widely acclaimed; each 3D title of the series regularly ranks among the best-selling and appreciated games [5]. It generated nearly 475 million copies, positioning itself among the main series of video games and media franchises for turnover. The series is considered one of the largest cultural exports of Scotland and the UK; although the games are set in a fictional version of the United States, they contain numerous references to the Scottish roots of its developers [b].
