The debate on the future of Grand Theft Auto VI is in full swing, with the community questioning which titles could be able to compete for the Game of the Year title at the highly anticipated Rockstar game. The central demand, fueled by the expectations accumulated over the years of waiting, mainly concerns Crimson Desert, Pearl Abyss’ latest RPG action. According to an authoritative voice, that of Mike York, former developer of Rockstar Games with experience in the animation of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA VI could actually succeed in winning the GOTY in 2026. York, during a YouTube video dedicated to the analysis of Crimson Desert, pointed out that “easy to lose” in that game could be a determining factor for this result. York does not express an unconditional endorsement, highlighting that to subtract the GOTY to GTA 6 it would be necessary something exceptional. "There should be a reason people hate GTA 6 because this game ends up taking the place of Game of the Year," said the former developer. While recognising the capabilities of Crimson Desert, especially in a hypothetical scenario where GTA VI should delay its planned launch for November 2026 (now confirmed by Rockstar), York underlines the temporal perspective as a key element: while Crimson Desert is already available, GTA VI is still far away. Twelve years of waiting from the GTA 5 exit created an unprecedented wait, feeding an immense hype. The question of the Game of the Year 2026 is therefore predicted as one of the most competitive of the recent videoludic history, demonstrating that the gaming market is unpredictable and that nothing can be considered discounted.
