Behind the scenes of GTA 6: Four Abandoned Screenplays and Rockstar Obsession

After more than ten years of waiting, Grand Theft Auto VI finally approaches reality. However, the path to this new chapter of Rockstar Games’ criminal epic was far from simple, marked by a continuous process of review and abandonment of ideas. To reveal unpublished details is a former employee of the company and former editor of Rockstar Magazine, who unveiled as four different versions of the script of the sequel of GTA 5 were discarded before the definitive story was formed with protagonists Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval. The development of GTA 6 began in 2014, just after the huge success of Grand Theft Auto 5. The first draft of the plot had been entrusted to Dan Houser, whose narrative style, characterized by mature tones and provocative, had already demonstrated its effectiveness in the previous chapters. This first version provided a former police officer of Vice City, involved in criminal activities to save his son, who, in turn, was trapped in the world of drugs under the guidance of a powerful Colombian lord. Despite the ambition of the script, it was judged “too dark” both by Rockstar and Take-Two, believing that it could turn away a part of the audience. Subsequently, he attempted to create an African-American soldier just out of prison, with a more personal and less gloomy plot. This idea was also abandoned after a few months. The third iteration, developed in 2019, did not exceed the internal examination. This continuous cycle of cancellations led Rockstar to temporarily stop the narrative development, in conjunction with Houser's departure in 2020. It was only after this period that formed the definitive version of the story of GTA 6, centered on the criminal duo Lucia and Jason Duval, inspired by the couple Bonnie & Clyde. The fact that four different versions of the script have been developed over ten years, and with a development budget that exceeds billion dollars, demonstrates the obsessive attention to detail and perfectionism typical of Rockstar Games. If the results are up to expectations, we will find out in 2026. But one thing is certain: GTA 6 will not only be a video game, but a world-wide cultural event.
